DPW London Gateway welcomes world’s first electric straddle carrier fleet

DP World celebrates the arrival of eight fully electric straddle carriers at its upcoming US$432 million fourth berth in London Gateway.

This groundbreaking move signifies a major leap in sustainable logistics, as these innovative machines will form part of the world's first all-electric fleet at a port, servicing the inaugural all-electric berth.

Weighing approximately 62 tonnes each and costing US$15 million, these straddle carriers boast zero emissions and require just 45 minutes of charging for up to four hours of operation. Manufactured by industry leader Kalmar, they mark a significant stride towards DP World's goal of electrifying its port and terminal equipment globally by 2050.

"The arrival of the electric straddle carriers is another milestone for the worlds first all-electric berth, following the delivery of the two largest quay cranes in Europe earlier this year. When operational, the berth will future-proof DP Worlds UK operations by continuing to service the largest container ships in existence and acting as a springboard to extend our reach into the supply chain," stated Ahsan Agha, vice president of port operations at DP World London Gateway.

The inauguration of the new fourth berth signifies a significant leap forward in DP World's pursuit of sustainability objectives. This development follows the recent announcement that its terminals in the UK, including those in Southampton and London Gateway, have transitioned to being fossil-diesel-free by adopting Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). Recognized as the 'Sustainability Company of the Year' at Multimodal 2023, DP World is committed to becoming the leading sustainable logistics entity in the UK.

Alongside its terminals in Southampton and London Gateway, DP World offers comprehensive logistics, forwarding, and European transport services, all of which are seamlessly integrated into the company's global network. With operations spanning 78 countries, DP World plays a pivotal role in handling 10% of the world's trade.

"At a time when the pressure to manage costs, maintain reliability and improve speed has never been greater, DP Worlds growing array of technologically advanced assets and capabilities will help our UK and European customers to stay competitive for years to come," added Ahsan Agha.
