Breaking: Container ship suffered a malfunction and its voyage was interrupted

 

 

 

Recently, a container ship "GSL ELENI" serving the 2M Alliance trans-Pacific route suffered a breakdown during the voyage, and the voyage was forced to stop for maintenance, and the shipment schedule has been delayed. The ship was on its way from Vancouver to Yokohama on December 29 when its rudder became stuck on the port side while passing through the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

 

Between 31 December and 1 January, with the help of six tugboats, it was towed to Victoria for repairs. The container ship GSL ELENI arrived at Ogden Point on January 1 after suffering a rudder failure, according to Port Victoria. As of now, the ship remains anchored at Ogden Point.

 

Container ship "GSL ELENI" IMO 9285677, with 93,572 dead weight tons and a capacity of 7849TEU, was built in 2004 and is flying the Liberian flag. At the time of the incident, the ship was serving the 2M Alliance Asia to North America route (Marschky TP1 service /MSC MAPLE service) with voyage number 249S. Multiple shipping companies may be involved: MAERSK, MSC, ALIANCA, HAMBURG SUD, MCC, SEAGO, SEALAND.

 

The ship left Vancouver on Dec. 28 and will next call at Yokohama, Busan, Xiamen and Yantian, according to shipping schedule data on Maersk's website. As of now, the ship remains docked in Victoria and is due to depart on January 6 (date subject to change).
