Port of New York and New Jersey reaches 1.3 million TEUs in first two months of 2024

In February 2024, the Port of New York and New Jersey saw notable growth across various metrics, including total volume, imports, exports, rail, and auto shipments, marking it as the second-busiest February on record.

 

Total volume for February stood at 632,455 TEUs (equivalent to 349,792 containers), reflecting a 10.7% increase from the same month in 2023. Year-to-date figures show that the port has handled a total of 1,299,801 TEUs (717,891 containers) in the first two months of 2024.

 

The port's imports experienced a significant uptick of 15.2% in February, reaching 332,241 TEUs (183,665 containers), compared to 288,314 TEUs (159,748 containers) in February of the previous year. From January to February, imports at the Port of New York and New Jersey amounted to 675,031 TEUs (373,364 containers), marking a 10.2% increase from the same period in 2023.

 

At the same time, exports totalled 101,636 TEUs (54,505 containers), showing a 3% increase year-over-year. However, the export volume for the first two months of 2024 has slightly decreased to 206,360 TEUs (110,395 containers), down by 2.2% from the same period in the previous year.

 

In addition, export empties grew by 7.3% in February 2024, totalling 196,213 TEUs with year-to-date figures also indicating a 6% increase, with export empties reaching 414,091 TEUs in 2024 compared to 390,579 TEUs in the same period of 2023. Import empties surged by 55.8% from January through February 2024 compared to the corresponding period in 2023.

 

Rail volume witnessed a significant increase of 17.2% with a total of 52,948 containers handled in February. Year-to-date rail volume also showed growth, with a 7.1% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

 

Furthermore, auto shipments saw a 5.1% rise in February 2024, with a total of 24,805 autos moving through the US port. Year-to-date auto volume for the first two months of the year increased by 14.5% compared to the corresponding period in 2023.
